Peter Corney begins his work with: "The only object the author of this work has in making his observations on the trade between the north-west coast of America and the Sandwich islands and China, is, to point out to the merchants of this country the vast trade that is carried on between those places by the Americans and the Russians while an English flag is rarely to be seen." While Corney's interest is in the fur trade in the Pacific Northwest, he shows how important the Sandwich Islands were to this trade as a place for acquiring provisions, watering and also for carrying on the sandalwood trade with China.       The U.S.S. Vincennes, Captain William Finch, arrived at Honolulu October 2, 1829. While his charge, in part, was to deal with debts of the Hawaiian government to American interests, he also was treated as a state visitor from the United States. John C. Jones was the U.S. Consul in Honolulu. In his letter to Finch he writes of the importance of the Sandwich Islands to American activities in the Pacific – primarily whaling and the fur trade from the Pacific northwest. His suggested that there should be regular visits by an American sloop-of-war to the Sandwich Islands to protect the interests of the United States in the region.

Laura Fish Judd first went to the Sandwich Islands as the wife of an American missionary. Her husband later became an important member of the government of the Hawaiian Kingdom and represented the kingdom's interests in a mission to the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. Laura Judd's memoir offers an intimate view of the life in the islands during the sometime turbulent years of the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
