      In Jeremiah N. Reynolds' account of the punitive expedition of the United States Frigate Potomac he includes a chapter on the vessel's visit to Charles Island in the Galapagos. His account is one of the earliest descriptions of the young colony on that island. Reynolds, one of he primary advocates for an United States expedition to explore the Pacific ocean, notes the importance of the Charles island colony to American whale ships in that ocean.

      Nightingale visited the James and Charles islands in the Galapagos in early 1834. The selection is Chapter 2 of his sketches. As a biologist he especially notes the peculiar animal life of the islands. He does write of the whale fishery and the colony on Charles Island.

      In Dr. Ritter's second Atlantic Monthly article he describes settling on the island and the difficulties in trying to pursue gardening activities for sustinence. He details problems with insects, wild goats, and feral hogs that raided his gardens. The "satan" of his title is a large hog that could not be killed despite all his attempts to do so.

      The last part of Dr. Ritter's trilogy in the Atlantic Monthly. He describes Floreana (Charles Island / Santa Maria), his initial attempts at raising food and building a home, life with his companion Dore Strauch, and the arrival of new settlers.
