Many original print editions of works listed on this page have numbered footnote citations throughout the text—for example, 1, 2, … and so on, with the count starting again at 1 for the first citation on each page, with the footnotes appearing at the bottom of the page on which they are cited. Thus, a paragraph extending from the bottom of one page to the top of the next may have footnote citations of, say, 4 and 5, followed by 1 and 2 on the next page.

Since these online versions have no traditional “pages,” each footnote now follows the paragraph in which it is cited, and the numbers in the original print edition are replaced by the symbols *, †, ‡, ^ and ||.
