Bligh's Vlydt Journal

This is the journal which Bligh kept in the form of a log of his voyage back to England from Batavia, Java. Although they aren't mentioned, he was accompanied by the Bounty's clerk, John Samuel, and Bligh's servant, John Smith. The other 13 survivors of the launch voyage were left behind in Batavia, "All of whom were in good health...and I trust they will arrive safe." Two died within a fortnight of his departure, another aboard ship returning to England, and a fourth, the Surgeon Ledward, simply disappeared.

This journal was transcribed from images of a portion of Bligh's personal Logbook of the Bounty, held at the State Library of New South Wales. Nothing has been omitted.
