Mr. Nelson very ill. Three Invalids. Carpenter returned to his duty on the 15th. Employed about the Vessel.
As I have expressed a desire to see the seed Breadfruit Mr. Wanjon had some sent from the Country to shew me. If we except colour this Fruit has no resemblance to the other. Its surface is covered with projecting points near an half Inch long which give it the appearance of being covered with prickles but these points are tender and being easily broke emitts a milky substance like the other fruit but its inside is full of large seed which may be compared to Windsor Beans and are equally good when either boiled or roasted. No other part is eatable. The Tree I am told is to all appearance the same as that which bears the Fruit without Seed, or the Otaheite kind and is called Succoom Raja, the other Succoom Beejee. I proposed to Mr. Nelson before his Illness to take some of the good kind away with us, but if a change does not shortly take place in his Illness I am very apprehensive I shall have the misfortune to lose him.
