[H M Ship Providence from Jamaica towards] England – 1793

Remarks Monday June 17th

 1 pm: Fresh breezes and cloudy weather – at 1 Saw the Assistant and Rockhampton bearing SSE Made the Signal to come within hail

 3 pm: at 3 Spoke the Assistant & Captain Portlock came on board – at 4 Dark cloudy weather the wind shifted suddenly to the Westward, bore away to the Rockhampton In 2d Reefs – at 6 heavy rain – at 8 fresh breezes & cloudy Carried a light all night

11 pm: Ditto Weather

 5 am: Bore up – strong Squalls with heavy rain In 3d Main & close reefed the Fore Top Sail – At 8..30 saw Land from the Mast head bearing WbN 4 or 5 Leagues distant – at 9 Squally with heavy rain – at 9..30 the extremes of the Grand Caymans from W½S to NWbW distant off shore 8 or 9 Miles – at 10..45 the East end of the Island bore N8°W distant off shore 2 Miles – Moderate breeze and cloudy weather – out 2d Reefs & set Top Gallant Sails The Thomas with the Rockhampton in tow & keeping good way with us – Opened a Cask of Beef No 1393 contents 66 double pieces – Cleaned below and got up all wet cloaths to dry – a strange brig in the SE – At Noon moderate breeze & cloudy weather The Assistant, Antelope, Cleminson, Thomas & Rockhampton in Company. SE part of Grand Caymana N64East Southermost part of the Island S82°W – Bowden Town N75°W distant 8 Miles
