Tobin's Providence Logbook Jun 4, 1793

[H M S Providence from Port Royal Jamaica] towards Bluefields Jamaica – 1793

Tuesday June 4th

 1 pm: Fresh Gale and very hazy weather

 4 pm: At 4 Pedro Bluff WNW 6 or 7 Leagues distant, Extremes of the Land in sight from WNW to NE off shore 6 or 7 Leagues – at 5 Pedro Bluff North 4 or 5 Miles – In steering Sails – at Sun set Pedro Bluff E¾S and Starve Gut Point NW distant off shore about 3 Miles, and the Westernmost land bearing NW½N – at 7 Up Foresail & hauled to the wind – sounded in 20 fathom water

 8 pm: At 8 fresh Gale and fair weather with Lightning in the NW

12 mid: Heavy Squalls with Light showers of rain

 1 am: In 3d Reefs & wore Ship

 4 am: Wore Ship

 5 am: At Day light Black River point NEbN and extremes of the Land from NNW to EbN out 3d & 2d Reefs – at 6 bore away extremes of the Land from NNW to EbN and Black River point NEbN – off shore about 9 Miles – At 8 Luanna Point E½N Bluefields N½E off shore 3 or 4 Miles – Extremes of the Land in sight from WNW to ESE – at 10..30 brought up with the Small Bower in 5¼ fathoms water, sand & Rocky bottom – The Tavern at Bluefields bearing NEbE – Shipping in Savannah La Mar NWbW½W – Extremes of the Land SE½S to WbN distant off the nearest part about two Miles – In 2d Reefs Top Sails & furled Sails – Hoisted out the Boats
