Tobin's Providence Logbook Feb 4, 1793

[H M Ship Providence from St. Vincents towards] Jamaica – 1793

Monday February 4th

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and fine clear weather – at 1 Hoisted out the whale boat and sent her for Lieutenant Portlock – Saw a sail standing in for the Land – at 4 Extremes of the Island Hispaniola in sight N23°W to N64°E off shore 8 or 9 Leagues

 7 pm: Worked the Pumps – at Sun set the western point of Hispaniola bore N17°W – Eastern Land in sight, NEbE off shore 8 or 9 Leagues – at 7 Lieutenant Portlock returned to the Assistant – In Boat

12 mid: Light breeze and fine weather

 3 am: at ½ past 3 Shifted the steering Sails to the Starboard Side

 5 am: Moderate breeze and fair weather – at day light Saw Land bearing ENE 8 or 9 Leagues distant – Passed an English brig sloop of war on a wind – a strange Sail in the SW – Served thick portable Soup gruel for Breakfast, at 8 a Fresh Gale – Washed the Gun, Orlop and Cockpit decks – Aired ship with fires – Sailmaker on the Quarter Deck awning – Served Bore cole & Portable Soup thickened with oatmeal for Dinner – at 11..30 Saw the Island Jamaica from the Top mast head – at Noon a fresh breeze & fair weather with haze – Jamaica from the Deck bearing West
