Tobin's Providence Logbook Jan 14, 1793

[H M Ship Providence from St Helena Islands towards] St. Vincents – 1793

Monday January 14th

 1 pm: Fresh gale and fair weather with Haze

 2 pm: Set Top Gallant Sails, out 2d Reef Mizen Top Sail

 3 pm: Saw flying fish

 5 pm: Unbent the old and bent the new Fore Top Gallant Sail worked the Pumps as usual

 8 pm: Cloudy

12 mid: Steady fresh gale – In Top Gallant Sails – Assistant dropping astern – at 3 set Top Gallant Sails

 3 am: Strong Fore and cloudy – In Top Gallant Sails

 5 am: Squally

 6 am: Set Top Gallant Sails – thick hazy weather – Saw flying fish & found three in the fore chains – Served thick portable Soup gruel for breakfast – cleaned below and aired with fires – at 9 unbent the Main Topsail to repair – out 2d Reef Fore Top Sail & set the Lower and Fore Top Mast steering Sail – Unbent the old & bent the new Main Top Gallant Sail – Served the weekly allowance of vinegar – Borecole and portable Soup mixed with oatmeal for dinner – Exercised marines at small Arms and fired – Made the Assistants Signal to make more Sail – answered – at 1 set the Main Top Sail with two reefs in it – At Noon fresh Gale and thick Hazy weather Sun out at times – Sold the Effects of Thomas Galloway deceased at the Mast
