Tobin's Providence Logbook Dec 10, 1792

H M S Providence from Timor towards [St. Helena – 1792]

Monday December 10th

 1 pm: Moderate breezes and fine weather

 3 pm: Ditto Weather Saw an Albatross

 6 pm: Lost a Log and three Lines – Saw a Portuguese Man of War (Nautilus)

12 mid: Fresh Gale and cloudy

 2 am: Shortened Sail for the Assistant

 4 am: Fresh breezes

 6 am: Made all Sail, the brig running ahead as the wind decreased – Saw two men of war birds – People breakfasted as usual

 9 am: Pleasant weather air agreeably cool – Served the weekly allowance of Vinegar, with borecole & portable Soup, in thick gruel for dinner – Washed all the Decks & aired with fires – Carpenters caulking the Quarter deck & Pinnace – Sailmaker on old Sails

12 noon: Moderate breezes and fine weather – Latitude Observed 24°..06′ South
