[H M Ship Providence from Matavai Bay Otaheite] towards Timor in the East Indies – 1792

Remarks Saturday September 1st 1792

 1 pm: Moderate breezes and fair weather – Saw Boobies, Noddies the black kind of Gull and flying fish

 4 pm: Hazy

 6 pm: at ¼ past 6 the Assistant made the Signal for seeing breakers, and to denote danger. Saw the shoal bearing from SWbW to WSW about 2 miles distant – hauled to the wind on the starboard Tack & made the Assistants Signal to come within hail; hove too tried for ground with 94 fathoms Line but found none – Spoke the Assistant & In 1st Reefs – numbers of Boobies and Noddies about

12 mid: Caught Noddies – Tacked per Signal

 2 am: at 2 Tacked per Signal – at 4 Tacked per Signal – The Assistant leading on each Tack

 6 am: At 6 AM bore away the Assistant leading – ¾ past 6 saw the shoal from the mast head bearing WBN – Served thick portable Soup gruel for Breakfast – at 8 the Shoal WNW 2 or 3 Leagues distant not seen from deck – Saw Porpoises Boobies and Noddies – at ½ past 8 made the Signal and Spoke the Assistant, at 9 more breakiers from the Mast head on the Lee beam and bow – at ¼ past 10 South part of Breakers in sight SbW 3 or 4 Miles – Tacked per Signal – Spoke the Assistant

12 noon: At Noon fresh breeze and cloudy weather with a hazy horizon – Breakers just in sight from the Mast head bearing NNW about 7 Miles distant
