Tobin's Providence Logbook Aug 21, 1792

[H M Ship Providence from Matavai Bay Otaheite] Towards Timor in the East Indies – 1792

Tuesday August 21st

 1 pm: Fresh breezes and cloudy weather with haze – Sailmaker at work

 5 pm: worked the pumps

 7 pm: In 2d Reefs and shortened Sail

 8 pm: Made the Signal, and hauled the wind on the Larboard Tack – fine weather and tolerably light

11 pm: Wore Ship every two House during the night the Assistant leading on each Tack with a light

 4 am: * Chief of the Northern of the new Hebrides
A New Hebrides Island
Island D*  Middle part SW½W 4 or 5 miles

 5 am: Moderate breeze and cloudy weather – at ¾ past 5 bore up and made all Sail – Saw a flock of Sea birds at a distance besides Tropic birds*
* some on the wales

 9 am: Served the usual breakfast

10 am: Up all Chests and Bags and washed well below aired with the foremost Stove

11 am: Exercised the boats crew with small Arms – Sailmaker fitting the hoses to the awnings – served Krout

12 noon: At Noon a fresh breeze and fair weather with haze
   Latitude Observed 13°..43′ South
