Tobin's Providence Logbook Jul 21, 1792

[H M Ship Providence from Matavai Bay Otaheite] towards Timor in the East Indies in 1792

Saturday July 21st

 1 pm: Fresh gale and very hazy weather with much sea

 4 pm: Saw Tropic birds, mother carys chickens and some of the petterel kind

 6 pm: In lower steering sail

 8 pm: Cloudy – down Topmast steering sail in top gallant Sails and 2d Reefs

10 pm: In 3d Reef Main Top Sail

12 mid: Fresh gale and cloudy

 6 am: Moderate breeze and cloudy out 2d & 3d Reefs Main and 2d Fore Top Sail, set Top Gallant Sails the Lower and fore topmast steering sail

 9 am: Saw Whale and red backed tropic birds, and some of the petterel kind – Hauled down the Fore Top Mast Studding sail and clewed up the Fore Top Sail to [?] it – at 10 out 1st Reefs and set the studding sail again The Mizen Top Sail tye gave way, spliced it and hoisted the sail again – set Top Gallant Studding Sails – Served fresh pork plantains &c – at Noon a fresh breeze and fair weather with haze Assistant in Company Latitude Observed 17°..41′ South
