Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

January 1793

Saturday 12  Moderate breezes & open Cloudy Weather PM in a Squall carried away the Lower Studding sail Hallyards & lost the Studding sail at 7 in 1st Reefs of the Topsails AM Fresh breezes & Squally with rain at times People employed washing & mending their Cloaths at 11 Squally In 1st reef of the Mainsail & 2nd reef of the Topsails at Noon in Company with the Providence

Sunday 13  Fresh breezes & fair Weather PM out all reefs & set Top Gallant sails at [?] Squally Double reefed the Top Sails & took in Top Gallant sails AM Fresh Gales & hazey caught a number of Flying fish at 5 out 2nd reef of the Main Topsail & set the Main Top Gallant sail Served Spruce beer at Noon Fresh Gales & Cloudy in Company with the Providence

Monday 14  Fresh breezes & Cloudy Weather PM out 2nd reef of the Fore Topsail made & shortened sail Occasionally caught a number of Flying fish AM Fresh Gales & hazey made & shortened sail as necessary out reefs of ye Topsails [Split?] Fore Topmast Studding sail at Noon Fresh Gales & fine Cloudy Weather in Company with the Providence

Tuesday 15  Fresh Gales & hazey PM out reef of the Mainsail Answered the Signal to come within hail at 5 passed through a strong ripling at 3 in 1st reef of the Topsails AM Fresh breezes & clear got the Fore Top Gallant yard down unbent the sail it being [?] bent [?] got the yard up & set the Sail People variously Employed cleaned below washed with Vinegar & Aired with Fires Served Spruce beer .. At Noon Fine Weather in Company with the Providence

Wednesday 16  Fresh breezes & open Cloudy Weather PM Sailmaker Employed repairing Sails People making Wads &c made & shortened sail as necessary AM Fresh breezes & hazey made & shortened sail as before People employed knotting yarns &c at Noon Fresh breezes & fine Weather in Company with the Providence

Thursday 17  Moderate breezes & open Cloudy Weather PM Employed as before [?] set Studding sails Occasionally AM Moderate breezes & clear Weather Shifted the Fore Top Gallant sail at ½ past 8 answered the Signal to come within hail Sailmaker repairing the Quarter deck awning & Marines cleaning Small Arms People as before at Noon Fresh Gales & clear in Company with the Providence

Friday 18  Fresh breezes & Clear PM Employed as before AM Fresh breezes & Cloudy made & shortened sail Occasionally People employed shifting their Hammocks Airing their Bedding at 10 Answered the Signal to come within hail out reefs of the Topsails at Noon Fresh breezes & Cloudy in Company with the Providence
