Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

January 1793

Saturday 5  Fresh breezes & open Cloudy Weather PM unbent the best Foresail & bent the Old one at ½ past 3 Squally with rain made & shortened Sail as necessary saw a number of Mother Careys Chickens carried away the Fore Top Gallant Studding Sail Tack AM Fresh breezes & Cloudy with a following Sea got down the Fore Top Gallant yard unbent the Sail bent another got up the yard & set the Sail Sailmaker repairing the Top Gallant sail People mending & washing their Cloaths cleaned below washed with Vinegar & Aired with Fires at Noon Fresh breezes & Squally in Company with the Providence

Sunday 6  Moderate breezes & clear Weather PM Employed as before made & shortened Sail Occasionally to keep in our Station AM Moderate & open Cloudy Weather Shifted Top Gallant sails Served Spruce beer to the Ships Company at Noon Fine Weather in Company with the Providence

Monday 7  Moderate breezes & fine open Cloudy Weather PM made & shortened sail as necessary saw a Boobey AM Moderate & clear People employed clearing away in the hold for Bread opened a Butt & started it into the Bread room Sailmaker mending the Fore & Aft Mainsail & Carpenter making Shot lockers at Noon Steady breezes & fine Weather in Company with the Providence

Tuesday 8  Moderate breezes & fine Weather PM Employed as before & working up Junk Made & shortened sail occasionally AM Moderate breezes & Clear unbent the Cables & coiled the ends below Exercised Great Guns & Small Arms & fired at a mark Employed as before Served Spruce Beer & Sourkrout at Noon in Company with the Providence

Wednesday 9  Squally Weather with rain PM Sailmaker Employed mending Sail Carpenter as before made & shortened sail as necessary AM Moderate breezes & hazey with heavy rain Employed as before at ½ past 10 in [? ?] Studding sails Top Gallant sails & lowered the Topsails at ½ past 11 handed Topsails & set Top Gallant sail at Noon Fresh breezes & [close?] heavy Weather in Company with the Providence

Thursday 10  me breezes & Squally Weather with rain PM Employed as before made & shortened sail Occasionally to keep in our Station AM Light breezes & Cloudy made & shortened sail Occasionally in Squalls shifted the Fore & Aft Main sail at Noon Moderate & Cloudy in Company with the Providence

Friday 11  Fresh breezes & open Cloudy Weather PM People variously Employed made & shortened sail as necessary AM Moderate breezes & clear Employed as before Served Spruce beer Answered the Signal to come within hail in Company with the Providence
