May 1, 1789 May Friday 1st Strong gales at ESE & SE — this afternoon a party set out again but return without much in the Evening Mr Hayward swam of[f] to the Boat to let me know that Captn Bligh meant to sleep onshore in the cove — by the Fire — that he himself was come of off today with me — he said that Captn Bligh beg'd that we would keep a good lookout if any canoes should come — Captn Bligh sent each man in the boat a small piece of Pork and a Plantain at daylight the party onshore set out again about 8 oclock. John Norton came down to the place where they had hauld themselves up and call out, good news — good news. Natives. here is a man & woman — they came down to the cove where
Captn Bligh was — he made friends with those people — soon after other Natives came to them — the Number I cannot tell — at Noon Captn Bligh sent me a small piece of Pork and a Quarter of a Bread fruit — I [?] the Button off my Jacket and sent them onshore — to Purchas what we want'd
May 2, 1789 Saturday May 2 [? ?] — at sea — wind ESE — the Transactions onshore I cannot say any thing about a canoe came in with four men — they brought a few cocoa nuts and bread fruit which Captn Bligh bought of them — they want to come to the Boat but I made signs to them that must go on shore
