Bounty Enters Matavai Bay, Otaheite. (a painting by John Hagan)

John Hagan's Bounty Chronicles

with his

Catalog of Bounty Paintings.

Introduction.

While visiting the Pitcairn Islands Study Center - Pacific Union College I came across the following note below a portrait of Capt. William Bligh:

"From the 'Bounty Chronicles' (by John Hagan), 28 original oil paintings depicting characters and scenes of the HMAV Bounty. Currently unavailable."

Having prior experience in working with websites that had gone dark I started a search for Mr. Hagan's 'Bounty Chronicles' and his "28 original oil paintings". While I eventually located the files I was seeking, it required searching through the following URLs on archive.org's Wayback Machine:

  • http://www.ablindeye.com/

The pages that follow are my attempt to recreate the "Bounty Cronicle" pages as they originally appeared. Some obvious typographical errors have been corrected and some limited stylistic changes have been made.

The The Bounty Chronicles. pages probably remain very close to their originals. Nineteen of Hagan's images (some as only details) appear in this collection of pages.

Hagan's The Bounty Catalog of paintings. contains 38 of the 40 works said to exist. It is the one place where all (or almost all?) of his paintings appear in one place.

The The 'Bounty Chronicles' Original Fine Arts Collection.* features 28 of Hagans Bounty paintings that were being offered as miniature reproductions with sales handled through the Pitcairn Islands Study Center store. These pages once appeared on the Center's website.

The last collection of pages are an abbreviated catalog Mr. Hagan possibly created to market prints of his Bounty paintings. The page itself has the title: Paintings: 'Bounty' Volumes 1 & 2. Some of the 24 paintings are noted in the following way: "In the 'Bounty' collection at the Pacific Union College, Angwin CA." This is possibly an incomplete effort because many paintings have a note indicating an image detail is available, but none have been found.
