Abandonment of the Whalers
in the Arctic Ocean
Sept. 1871.



The followgin five hand-colored lithographs have the collective title "Abandonment of the Whalers in the Arctic Ocean Sept. 1871.

They illustrate in sequence the fate of thirty-three whaling vessels which were trapped and then abandoned in the Arctic ice and the subsequent rescue of more than a thousand men by other vessels which carried them to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaiian Islands).

John Perry Newell (1831–1898), lithographer and marine painter, was the artist and the publisher was Benjamin Russell of New Bedford, Massachuestts. J. H. Bufford's Lith, 490 Washington St, Boston, was the printer.
