Strange Circumstance. – The following is an extract from the log of the whaling ship Achilles, Captain Lee, relative to the discovery of a boat at sea, containing three N. Zealand natives, about one thousand miles from any land. There can be no doubt that the account these men give of themselves is mere fabrication, and that they have been the aggressors in some way or other, as no master or crew of a ship belonging to any civilized nation could set In so barbarous a manner. The extract is as follows: – "Sunday. April 30, 1837; barque Achilles Lee, commander, in lat. 23° 34' south, and long. 171° 15' east saw a whale boat bearing north of us, with two sprit-sails set. At one came up to her and found three New Zealanders on board, one wounded in both thighs with ball and small shot, one through the right thigh with a ball, and the other grazed on left thigh; they had neither food nor water. There were in the boat three harpoons marked "S.P.B.," two spades, three empty kegs, two axes, two sails, one paddle marked "S.P.B.," and by their account had been seventeen days at sea; had when they left the ship one keg of potatoes, and one keg of water. They also stated they had been fired at, and otherwise ill used on board, which caused them to leave the ship; as nears as we could learn, for neither could speak English plainly, the ship was the Ploughboy of Nantucket."
