The Sick list to day contained under the Complaint Rheumatism, Mr Huggan, John [actually Thomas] McIntosh and John Millward.
The Surgeons complaint has been owing to constant state of intoxication. The hot weather perhaps is the principal cause of the Mens disorder, for I find them much better now they are a little more accustomed to it. Several have complained of a faintness towards Mid Day. I therefore have for some time past stopt all their Salt provisions and feed them upon Portable Soup thickened with Pearl Barley, and Issue to them the amount of their Salt Meat, in Flour and Raisins.
The Surgeon approving of my request, that a Beverage made from the Elixir Vitrol, should be issued to every one fasting at the rate of a half pint to each person, I therefore saw it served this Morning, a two ounce Viol full being Mixt with 43 half pints of Water which is not 30 drops to each half pint.
The decoction of Malt is made from the Essence at the rate of three Table Spoonfulls to a Quart of Water for the Men.
I issue thick barley Gruel constantly for Breakfast, as I consider it much more salutary in hot weather than Oatmeal.
Vinegar, Mustard and Sour Krout every one has as much of as they can use.
