The first part of this Day fair Weather the middle and latter Cloudy with Lightning and some Rain. Every person respectively employed. My Astronomical Observations ended with the first part of this day, the Weather being too Cloudy. One of my Young Gentlemen, Mr Hayward, on his Walking a few Yards from the Wooding party discovered an Old Trunk of a Tree that had cut on it A.D.1773. I went with him to see it and found it as distinct as if it had not been cut a Month, even the very slips of the knife were as discernable as at the first Moment. This must have been done by some of Captain Furneaux Crew in March 1773 which is 15 years and 5 Months since, and I conceive the Tree was dead when it was done, otherwise the shedding of the Bark would have totally efaced it, and it serves to show us the durability of the Wood.
We still continue to catch Rock Cod, but few other Fish are in the Bay that we can catch with the seine. One of my People caught a very large Skate, and altho we find no great abundance of Fish there are sufficient to give us tolerable supplies. I therefore stopt serving of Portable Soup while here.
