Fine Weather and towards the latter part the Wind backing to the Northward, the Surf on the Beach began evidently to lessen, and we wooded and watered with little difficulty.
The People also caught many sizeable Rock Cod alongside and fully suficient for their refreshment. As my Ships Company when divided into three Boats and others cutting wood made the Working Party on board very small, I repeated my injunctions to the Commanding Officer Mr. Fryer that he would take care to keep all officers employed as well as Men, which on his endeavouring to do, he was opposed by the Carpenter who refused to assist in hoisting water into the Hold, altho their Strength was only himself one of his Mates and a Quarter Master to do the duty. On my coming on board Mr. Fryer acquainted me of this circumstance, but my directions and presence had as little effect. He waid he would do anything in his line; but as to that duty he could not comply with it. I therefore ordered the different Persons evidence to be drawn out and attested, and then gave orders that untill he worked he should have no provisions, and promised faithfully a severe punishment to any Man that dared to assist him, which immedeatly brought him to his senses. It was for the good of the Voyage that I should not make him or any man a prisoner. The few I have even in the good State of health I keep them, are but barely sufficient to carry on the duty of the Ship, it could then answer no good purpose to lose the use of a healthy strong young man in my situation. I therefore laid aside my power in that particular for the good of the Service I am on, altho it continued in force with equal effect.
The Weather now turning moderate and clear I fixed a small Tent on shore and began Observations to find the Rate of the Time Keeper, Longitude, and Variation of the Compass.
