H M Ship Providence from Jamaica [towards England – 1793]

Remarks Monday June 24th

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and fine weather with haze – at 4 fresh breezes and hazy – at 5..30 the Assistant made the Signal for seeing Land bearing SbW – at 5..40 saw the Land distant [blank] Leagues – At 6..30 Extremes of the Land from SWbW to SbE½E – Pan of Matanzas SbW½W distant off shore 4 or 5 Leagues

 7 pm: At 7 in 2d Reefs & Tacked Ship – handed the Main Sail and hauled the fore sail up in the Brails – At 9 saw three sail to leeward – at 10 spoke the Antelope Packet – she informed us the other two Sail were the Thomas & Cleminson

 4 am: Set the Courses – unbent the old & bent the ndew Mizen Topsail

 6 am: At 6 the Extremes of the Land from SEbS to SW distant off shore 7 or 8 Leagues – Out 2d Reefs. A Strange Brig and a ship in sight to leeward

 7 am: At 7..15 shortened Sail, lowered down the small cutter and sent her for Lieutenant Portlock – at 8 Punta de Yacos Eastermost extremes S78°E to S70W off shore about three Leagues – Pan de Matanzas S42°W & Matanzas Bay SSW. The Camaragua [Camarioca?] Hills S36E – sounded no ground with 120 fathoms

11 am: At 11 Tacked Ship and made sail Pan of Matanzas S44W Westermost extremes of Point de Yacos S77W The Eastermost extremes S85East Westermost Point of the Bay of Matanzas S19°W off shore about 3 Leagues

12 noon: At Noon Pan of Matanzas S30°W Point de Yacos SE¾E Westermost Land in sight SWbW distant off shore 4 or 5 Leagues – Fresh breezes & fair weather with haze – Assistant, Antelope, Thomas, & Cleminson in Company – Latitude Observed 23°..17′ North
