4 pm: Dark clouds passing over – with thunder from the NNE
6 pm: Cloudy weather – worked the Pumps as usual & let water into the Ship – at 6 thick rainy weather
12 mid: Fresh Breezes and cloudy weather
2 am: Lightning from the Eastward
5 am: At 5..45 A Strange Sail from the Mast head bearing NWbN – at 7 made the Signal and spoke the Assistant fired a Gun & brought to a schooner under American Colors – sent the Assistant to speak her –
7 am: At 7..30 The Assistant bore down to us with the schooner and made the Signal to come within hail – hove to – at 8 Lieutenant Portlock came on board – The Schooner proved to be in the smuggling trade & without papers – Cleaned below – Exercised great Guns & Small Arms – at 10 Saw Land bearing from WbN½N to NbW½W – At Noon the westermost extremes of Land in sight, being near Cape Corientes, bore WbN½N Eastermost Extremes NbE½E off shore about 3 Leagues – The Vessels as yesterday, and the Prize Schooner in Company – Moderate breeze and cloudy weather with much haze
