H M Ship Providence from St Helena [towards St. Vincents – 1793]

Remarks Thursday January 17th

 1 pm: Moderate breezes and fair weather with haze

 3 pm: Opened a cask of Pork No 4. contents 122 double pieces & 1 of Beef No 1458 – 66 double pieces – Sailmakers repairing the Mizen Top Gallant Sail – worked the Pumps as usual

 8 pm: Fresh breezes and clear weather – In Lower Steering Sail

10 pm: Saw a Meteor in the SW Quarter

 2 am: Squally – in Top Gallant Sails Fore Top Mast steering & 2 reefs Mizen Top Sail

 4 am: Fresh Gale and Squally weather

 7 am: Served thick portable Soup gruel for breakfast – Out 2d Reef Mizen Top Sail & set Top Gallant Sails – at 8 a fresh Gale and fair weather – cleaned below and aired with fires

 9 am: at 9 squally with Rain, shortened Sail – spoke the Assistant – all well – Clewed up the Fore Top Sail mended, & set it again – Unbent the Jib to repair

11 am: Broached a Puncheon of Spruce Beer

12 noon: At Noon fresh breezes and fair – Assistant in Company
