H M S Providence from St Helena Islands towards [St. Vincents in the West Indies – 1793]

Tuesday January 1st

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and fine weather – Sailmaker repairing the old Foresail

 3 pm: Saw a tropic bird

 5 pm: Ditto Weather – unbent the 2d best & bent the old Fore sail

 7 pm: Spoke the Assistant – all well

 8 pm: Worked the Pumps as usual

 9 pm: Ditto Weather

12 mid: Fine weather & moon light – Saw a Sea bird

 4 am: At 4 Ditto Weather – at 5 Saw the Island of Ascension bearing SWbW (Extremes of the Island from S9°W to S25°West 6) off shore about 4 Leagues – Served thick portable Soup gruel for Breakfast – Saw Gannet Boobies – at 8 Extremes of the Island from S3°W to S4°E distant about 6 Leagues – Saw Tropic Birds, Carys Chikens, & a Man of war bird – Washed the Gun, Orlop and Cockpit decks & aired ship with fires – Sailmaker repairing the Fore Top Mast Staysail – At Noon moderate breezes and fine weather – Assistant in Company – The Center Mountain on Ascension S22E 11 or 12 Leagues Broached a Puncheon of Spruce Beer
