Tobin's Providence Logbook Aug 23, 1792

H M Ship Providence from Matavai Bay Otaheite [towards Timor in the East Indies – 1792]

Remarks Thursday August 23d

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and fine weather

 3 pm: Ditto Weather Unbent the old Main Top Gallant Sail it being torn, and bent a ndw one

 4 pm: Worked the Pumps

 5 pm: A Centinel was placed over the Water Casks to prevent any abuse in the expenditure of that article

 7 pm: Took in all the small Sails and 2d Reefs Top Sails

 8 pm: Moderate breeze and cloudy

11 pm: Saw Porpoises

12 mid: Ditto Weather – under an easy eail all night the Assistant leading a head with a light

 4 am: Ditto Weather

 5 am: Out Reefs and made all Sail – Saw Bonetas, tropic birds, Men of war birds and vast numbers of flying fish – Thick portable soup in gruel for breakfast – cleaned below and aired with fires – Krout in the Pease for dinner – Exercised Boats Crews with small Arms

12 noon: At Noon moderate breezes and fair weather with haze – Saw a brown Booby
   Latitude Observed 13°..41′ South
