Tobin's Providence Logbook Jul 4-7, 1792

H M S Providence Moored in Matavai Bay [Otaheite]

July 4-7 1792

Wednesday 4th First part moderate breeze and cloudy middle part calm and cloudy latter part light airs and calm at times – PM received a turn of water per Launch – AM Employed in the fore hold hoisting out and stowing away again, carpenters sawing plank lining the ports and repairing the whale boat – received a turn of water per Launch – Served fresh pork plantains bread fruit and cocoa nutts &c – and received a moderate supply

Thursday 5th First part fresh breeze and fair weather middle part light airs and fair, latter part light Airs and dark cloudy weather inclinable to Rain PM received two turn of water per Launch – AM Sent the Cutter to Oparre to Trade for provisions and the small cutter on shore to bream and Tar her bottom – people employed in the fore hold – Carpenters lining the ports and sawing plank – received a turn of water per Launch and the 1st Turn of wood per Launch – served fresh pork &c

Friday 6th First part moderate breeze and cloudy with a hard shower of rain – middle part light airs and cloudy with heavy showers of rain, latter part moderate breeze & dark cloudy weather with showers at times PM received a turn of water per Launch – The cutter returned from Oparre with a supply of pigs and fruit – AM Sent a party to haul the Seine – The party returned with 550 pounds of fish – people employed in the fore hold, Carpenters repairing the whale boat and sawing plank – Served two pounds of Fish to each Man

Saturday 7th First part fresh breezes with hard rain at times and a westerly swell, middle part heavy showers with squalls and Dark cloudy weather latter part Light winds with heavy cloudy weather – PM received a turn of water per Launch Struck Top Gallant Masts and got up a range of the Sheet cable – AM people employed in the fore hold – Carpenters caulking the greehouse and repairing the whale boat – received two turns of water per Launch – served fresh pork plantains &c and received a moderate supply
