[Log Book &c. of H M S Providence from Pt Praya in the Island] of St Iago towards the Cape of Good Hope – 1791

Thursday October 6th

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and fine weather

 3 pm: Hazy, employed pointing a spare fore and Main Topsail

 5 pm: Saw a Man of War bird

 6 pm: Strong Breeze and cloudy weather

 8 pm: Fresh Breezes and fine clear weather – kept a fire in the Galley the whole of the night

12 mid: Cloudy

 2 am: Squally – In Top Gallant Sails

 4 am: More settled, set Top Gallant Sails

 5 am: A Flying fish was found on board

 6 am: Moderate and cloudy

 8 am: Dark cloudy weather

 9 am: Fine clear weather – wasehd the Gun Deck – cleaned the Orlop and aired with fires – the People employed pointing a spare Mizen Topsail and knotting yarns

12 noon: At Noon moderate Breezes and fine clear weather – The Assistant in Company
