Log Book &c. of H M S Providence from Port Praya in the Island of [St Iago towards the Cape of Good Hope – 1791]

Monday October 3d 1791

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and hazy weather with a swell from the Southward

 4 pm: Caught a Bonetta

 6 pm: Aired the small Sails – at 5 Squally with showers

 9 pm: Moderate and hazy, kept a fire in the Galley throughout the night

12 mid: A Luminous appearance on the water

 1 am: Fresh Breezes and cloudy

 2 am: Squally, clewed down the Topsails

 4 am: Clear, saw several Dolphins

 6 am: Fresh Breezes and cloudy saw a great number of Albacores, Bonettas, Dolphin, flying fish, and Squids

10 am: This being Banyan Day served Bore coal; pearl Barley and Portable Soup to the Crew – Cleaned below, and aired Ship with fires

12 noon: Fresh Breezes with haze, and a swell from the Southward – The Assistant in Company
 Broached a Puncheon of Spruce Beer – made on board
   Latitude Observed 00°..14′ South
