[Log Book &c. of H M Ship Providence from Spithead towards] the Cape of Good Hope – 1791

Remarks &c Friday August 12th 1791

 1 pm: light Airs – Employed as needful at 2 Tacked and stood to the Southward

 8 pm: Cloudy Weather – In 2d Reefs of the Topsails

10 pm: hazy Weather Small rain – Tacked Ship

12 mid: Ditto Weather – The Ship suddenly breaking off

 1 am: The Wind increasing to a fresh Breeze with frequent squalls and flashes of Lightning from the NW hauled up the Main Sail and Handed it – took in the 3d Reefs of the fore and Mizen Topsails

 6 am: Set the [Main?] Sail

 7 am: Sent down the Fore Top Gallant Yard

 9 am: During the night shortened Sail occasionally for the Tender to come up

11 am: Cloudy

12 noon: Assistant in her Station
   Latitude Observed 46..43 North
