Tobin's Providence Logbook Jul 17-21, 1791

At Spithead

Sunday July 17th 1791

Wind North Easterly Light Breezes and Hazy weather employed serving the Cables and other necessary duty – AM Ditto Weather employed cleaning the Ship Fore and Aft – Received 3 Hogsheads of Beer fromn the Cruizer Cutter latterly light breezes and Foggy weather

Monday 18th North Easterly – Moderate Breezes and fair weather – Hoisted out the Boats – scraped the decks – Boatswain and Carpenters at the Dock Yard getting Stores

Tuesday 10th Wind Westerly at 5 PM received 8 Hogsheads of Beer 28 Hogsheads of Water 4 firken of Butter 3 Barrels Cheese and 26 Kegs of Essence of Malt – Returned empty Casks – at 8 PM fresh Gale and rain bent the sheet Cables employed [Making?] water in the Fore Hold – Scdrubbed the Hamacoes – at [1/6] AM loosed Sails to dry Received 162 pounds of fresh Beef Boatsain and Carpenters Stores – returned to the Dock Yard a 13½ [?] Cable to be surveyed

Wednesday 20th Wind WNW – Fresh Gales and Hazy Weather Received Warrant Officers Stores – at 8 AM Received 30 Hogsheads of water to compleat the Fore Hold – Returned 97 Empty Hogsheads – Came out of the Harbour HMS Salisbury bound to Newfoundland – The Clerk of the Checque mustered the Ships Company

Thursday 21st Wind WBN. Fresh Gales and cloudy weather. Received a 13½ Inch Cable for the one returned, likewise 10 Tons of Iron Ballast, Nine Boxes of Borecoal & 11 Boxes of Portable Soup – Employed cleaning the Ship Sent four Men to the Hospital – Viz. Philip Nelder, John French, John Russel, and Peter Murray
