Flinders's Providence Logbook Jan 2, 1793

Remarks ☿ [Wednesday] January 2nd 1793 H.M.S. Providence

 1 pm: Moderate Breezes & fine Weather Hoisted out the Whale Boat and sent her on board the Assistant for Lieutenant Portlock – At 2 The Island bore SSE½E 13 or 14 Leagues

 4 pm: Ditto Weather Flocks of Gannet Boobies seen

 6 pm: At ½ past 6 Mr Portlock returned on board the Assistant and we hoisted in the Boat

 8 pm: Moderate Trade and fine Night

12 mid: Fine Weather and tolerably clear

 4 am: Ditto Weather

 5 am: Saw flying fish and some Gannet Boobies or Soland Geese as they are called about Scotland w[h]here they frequent – these Boobies appear to be exactly the same Bird

 8 am: Fine clear Weather

 9 am: Boat to Quarters, mustered the People and exercised the Seamen at the Great Guns and Marines at small Arms. – Slops & Tobacco served to the Ships Company Sailmakers repairing the Fore Top Mast Stay sail Grog to day for the People

12 noon: At Noon Moderate Breezes & fine Weather
