Flinders's Providence Logbook Dec 6, 1792

Remarks ♃ [Thursday] December 6 1792 H.M.S. Providence

 1 pm: Moderate Breezes & fine Weather

 2 pm: Some Porpoises and the blowing of right Whales seen.

 4 pm: Ditto Weather Made the Assistants Signal to come within Hail at 7 Spoke her All well on board. Agreed to heave to and sound at 12 as judging we should be nearly in the Latitude of the Cape by that Time.

 8 pm: Cloudy Weather Carrying Top Gallant Studding sails and all possible Sail.

10 pm: Took in the Fore royal.

12 mid: Ditto Weather Shortened Sail, hove to and tryed for Soundings with 248 Fathom of Line but got no Ground. Set Studding sails and made all Sail again.

 4 am: Fresh Breezes & fine Weather

 5 am: Cloudy. Many Sea Birds about. a Fin back Whale and some Porpoises seen.

 7 am: Passed thro' brown Scum

 8 am: Fresh Breezes & Cloudy Weather

 9 am: Washed and cleaned below fore and aft. A Fire in the after Cockpit Stove.

10 am: Carpenters painting the Quick work of the Quarter Deck and caulking on the Main Deck

11 am: Set the Starboard Lower & Main Top Mast Studding sails. – A Cask of Spruce broached for the People.

12 noon: At Noon Fresh Breezes & Cloudy Weather
Assistant in Company.
