Remarks at Spithead

July 1791

Sunday 17 Light Winds and foggy Weather. Employed cleaning Ship.

Monday 18 Variable Weather but Moderate. Some Showers.

Tuesday 19 Rainy Weather and Strong Winds. PM received 8 Hogsheads of Beer 16 Hogsheads Water 4 Firkens of Butter 3 Barrels of cheese 25 Kegs of Essence of Malt. AM received 162 pounds of fresh Beef. some Boatswains and Carpenters Stores from the Yard sent the Small Bower cable on Shore to be surveyed. AM Received my Final Orders.

Wednesday 20 Fresh Gales & Cloudy Weather. Received Boatswain & Carpenters Stores 80 Hogsheads of Water and returned Empty casks. I made application for the People to be paid their Bounty Money and Two Months advance Mustered Ships Company.

Thursday 21 Ditto Weather. PM Received New Cable. Ten Tons of Iron Ballast Nine Boxes of Bore Cole [= borecole = kale] Eleven Boxes of Portable Soup and Four Half Hogsheads of Red Wine. Sent four Men Philip Nelder John French John Russell and Peter Murray to the Hospital.

Sunday 22 Moderate Breezes and fair Weather. Received 30 Bags of Bread. AM The clerk of the cheque came and paid the Bounty Money. Ships draught of Water forward 15 Feet..2 Inches aft 16 Feet..2 Inches.

Saturday 23 Fresh Winds and Variable Weather. AM The Commissioner came on board and paid the people Two Months advance. Received 691 pounds fresh Beef.

Sunday 24 Ditto Weather. AM Received 9 Hogsheads Beer. Read the Articles of War Washed and cleaned Ship Ready for Sea.

Monday 25 Fresh Gales and Cloudy Weather some Rain Punished John Jones Marine for absenting himself from the Ship, 12 lashes.

Tuesday 26 Squally & Rain the most part of these 24 Hours.

Wednesday 27 Strong Gales and Rain most part of the day. No prospect of being able to beat down Channel if I sailed, on the contrary every chance of injuring the Assistant I therefore determined to wait untill the Weather became Moderate and settled.

Thursday 28 Moderate Breezes but the Weather very unsettled Employed washing and cleaning Ship.

Friday 29 Unsettled Weather and generally blowing very strong I however unmoored and hove in to a half cable on the Small Bower.

Saturday 30 Fresh Gales with Rain. Struck Yards & Top Gallant Mast by Signal AM Received 191 pounds Fresh Beef and 16 Hogsheads of Beer Opened a Cask of Pork No. 1978 Contents 53 Double Peices.

Sunday 31 Fresh Breezes & Cloudy Weather. Received orders to desist Pressing Washed and cleaned Ship.
