With the exception of Chapter XXIV (vol. 1) and Chapters VII, XI, XXVII & XXVIII (vol. 2), chapters are untitled. Therefore, the Table of Contents seen here lists the first item in each chapter header, in lieu of the absent title.

In volume 2, FitzRoy makes frequent references to his Appendix volume, but often omits the number and/or title of the item to which he refers. In the absence of this information, a footnote is inserted in this online edition in the format “xx: title,” where “xx” is the number in the Appendix Table of Contents. In cases where FitzRoy has added a simple “Appendix” footnote, this information is added [in brackets] to that footnote.
-
In several places, a few notes are given at the end of a chapter. As with the footnotes just described, each note now immediately follows the paragraph in which it is cited.
-
Text or sic [in brackets] inserted in this web edition either adds an apparently-missing word, or makes a minor editorial correction.

Throughout the text, FitzRoy's spelling of ‘Chiloé’ as ‘Chilóe’ is left as is. He explains the different spellings in a volume 2 Chapter XVII footnote.
-
At places where there is a specific reference to one of the other volumes in the Narrative, a link is provided to the appropriate location in that volume.

Bold font, bright background in Table of Contents indicates chapters on the currently active page.

In Volume 1, corrections on “Errata et Corrigenda” page have been made to this text.

Some footnote citations to page numbers in “Sarmiento's Voyage” refer to the 1768 edition of Viage al Estrecho de Magallanes. Others—such as King's Chapter 3 (“See Burney, ii. p. 45, for a fuller account; also id. 71.”)— refer to a chapter in James Burney's 1806 Chronological History of Voyages:
- Chapter I: “Voyage of Sarmiento …” (pp. 3-44),
- Chapter II: “Expedition of Pedro Sarmiento … ” (pp. 45-57).
This online edition follows footnote citations to Viage … with a bracketed link to the equivalent text in Burney and/or in the Hakluyt 1895 English-language translation of the 1768 Spanish edition. For Burney, links are provided only for text within his Chapters 1 and 2.
